Spend a day with Keith Gotschall learning to turn

Morning:

Bowls, bowls, bowls, demo.

In this fast paced demo, Keith will turn a number of bowls. Of course going over the techniques that go into creating an attractive, useful bowl, but also addressing the design language necessary to making better bowls. There will be an interactive critique of bowl design, shape, possibilities. Being able to critique our own work honestly is the key to getting better results. Audience participation is actively encouraged!

Afternoon:

3 leg stool demo.

In this demo Keith lays out the basic stool seat and shows how to drill at the appropriate angles. He then turns the seat using a 4 jaw chuck. Next he will then show how to lay out a leg using the minimum of measuring tools and explain how to replicate. Demonstrating beads, coves and straight cuts to make a simple pattern, he will then show how easily it can be replicated quickly and accurately.

You will learn elements of design that will make replicating the legs of the stool very easy. Discussion of design will also show how to avoid common pitfalls, and ways around possible flaws. Techniques shown are simple, but effective in both spindle turning and bowl turning. Discussion with the audience will cover critique, furniture styles, possible options for further exploration and wood selection.
